"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it. "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net which was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind; when it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into vessels but threw away the bad. So it will be at the close of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous, and throw them into the furnace of fire; there men will weep and gnash their teeth. "Have you understood all this?" They said to Him, "Yes." And He said to them, "Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old." -------------------

The Most Valuable Find
--------------------------------
The parables of Jesus have made such a deep impression on the generations that they have often become proverbial. This is true for the little parable about the treasure in the field as well. In two short sentences, everything is said. In a field He does not own, a man discovers a treasure, which is even less his property. He probably works in the field as a poor day laborer and comes upon the buried treasure while working. The owner of the field knows nothing about the treasure. The man does not even think of informing the owner about the valuable find. He himself wants to be the happy one, so he sells what he has and buys the field from the unsuspecting landowner. "In his joy," Jesus says, and with that He gives the story its decisive keyword. Is Jesus not praising immoral conduct here? Even if the lucky finder had lawfully acquired the field, the seller definitely must have felt deceived. Now it is certainly not Jesus' intention to tell a "moral tale." Instead, He is talking about the "kingdom of heaven." He who finds this has "hit the jackpot," has had a stroke of great luck. But in contrast to the lottery, the finder of the treasure must take a necessary step: buy the field. And for this day laborer, that means selling everything, really everything, so that he can raise the purchase price for the field. This necessary step becomes even clearer in the second little parable. The pearl merchant sees the chance of acquiring the pearl of great value, the one every pearl merchant dreams of, like the "blue Mauritius" for stamp collectors, so to speak. Without hesitation, he sells what he has in order to buy it. It is worth everything else to him; to him it is the deal of his life. With it, he has made his fortune. He who finds "the kingdom of heaven" experiences a feeling of happiness like the finder of the treasure, an enthusiasm like that of the pearl merchant. The "kingdom of heaven" is no other than Jesus Himself. He is the treasure in the field, the pearl of great value. To discover Him is the luck of my life, but only if I, too, actually stake everything in order to gain Him. Winning Jesus is not like winning a lucky lottery number: I win Jesus at the price of exchanging everything else for Him. The exchange is worth it; the gain is incomparable. But it costs the full commitment. To want to have both will not work: my little bit of pleasure and glory, which I can win for myself from life; and Him, who is more precious than everything. Both parables culminate in a risky, daring action; they challenge you to take a courageous leap of faith. Half-hearted people do not manage it. Anyone who stakes a little on God and a little on his own little money purse will never experience the happiness to which Jesus invites us today. Joy is, the keyword of this Gospel. The treasure finder and the pearl merchant joyfully sell everything they have. Christians should be recognizable by the joy. For they have truly made the most valuable find. How sad it is when someone finds it and then, nevertheless, does not take hold of it.
